WORLDS IN MILAN.
FRANCESCO SOMAINI. AT THE ORIGIN OF THE SACRED
The theme of the “sacred” in Somaini arises from a reflection on the processes of regeneration, transformation, death and rebirth, in which the mystery and dimension of an ineliminable vitality are central. With respect to the different phases of his creative activity in which subjects linked to him emerge, also due to symbols activated by him independently or inserted in works for liturgical purposes, here presented are some nuclei of works inherent to this idea of “sacred” to which the sculptor feels similar.
On the occasion of MuseoCity, the Foundation organizes curator-guided visits to the exhibition At the origins of the sacred. The visitor is led here to discover the series of Martyrs (1958-61), which express the motif of the cross with a secular-existential approach linked to the post-war cultural climate (the theme taken up again in the cycle of the Carnifications of an architecture of the 1970s), including a work recently found in the collections of the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo, a starting point for a fruitful collaboration between different entities and “worlds”.
The other important section of the exhibition is dedicated to the Great Altarpiece of Life and Death: an installation created between 1967 and 1968 and left unfinished. Today finally rebuilt, although without the “cube of triumphant life” of which the design drawings are presented, on the basis of a letter sent by the artist to his friend and critic Enrico Crispolti in 1979, recently found.
